Book Blogger Hop #10

Book Blogger Hop
Hosted by Crazy for Books

This week’s question comes from Veronica who blogs at: Read Books, Have Fun

How/Where do you get your books? Do you buy them or go to the library? Is there a certain website you use like paperbackswap?

I get most of my books through BookCrossing.com, either via rings/rays or people sending me rabcks. I do also have a tendency, however, to buy any interesting looking books going  cheap at the supermarket or in charity shops. I'm also starting to be lucky enough to get the ocassional book from an author/publisher in exchange for a review.

"If you find a book you love, do you hunt down other books by the same author?"

Most definatly. I always have a few collections on my shelves by my current favourite authors. I collect these until I have them all, reading them as I get them, and then I try to read through the whole lot in order before deciding if they're worth keeping for a long time or I've had enough of them. My collections at the moment are Terry Pratchett (long term), Ben Elton, Ursula Le Guin, Christian Jacq and Jasper Fforde.

"If you could physically put yourself into a book or series…which one would it be and why?"

It would have to by Terry Pratchett's discworld series. I'd love to see magic in action, meet Rincewind, visit the Unseen University and travel to the edge of the world. I'm sure it would be an amazing experience!

"Do you read only one book at a time, or do you have several going at once?"

I try to stick to one book at a time. The reason for this is because I like to really read myself into the world it is set in and I find this hard if I'm reading more than one. Ocassionally I make an exception to this rule- for instance if my main read is very large (so unsuitable for transporting around) or likely to give me nightmares (and therefore unsuitable as a bedtime read). I might also read more than one book if I'm doing a read-a-long, so that I can stay in the same chapter as other people.
So, in short, I usually read only one book at a time, but it is possible that I can have several going at once.

"If I gave you £50 (or $80) and sent you into a bookshop right now, what would be in your basket when you finally staggered to the till?"

This is a very hard one for me to answer as I'm quite an impulsive buyer when it comes to books. I tend to pop around the store looking for offers (2 for 1s, 3 for 2s, 20% off etc) and then checking whether any of the books on the stands would interest me. Of course I'm  always on the loo out for titles that are both reduced and on my wishlist, but other than that I never really know what I'll come out with.
I always hope to find books to complete my couple of permenant collections by Christian Jacq, Terry Pratchett and Ursula Le Guin. I'm currently up to date on Terry Pratchett, but I know I'm still missing a few books by the other two so I guess there'd probably be some of their books in there.

Do you ever wish you would have named your blog something different?
Before I answer this question suppose I ought to explain to my readers where my blogs name comes from. 'QNN Story Factory' (otherwise known as 'The Story Factory') is another site whch I run, dedicated to story writing- the QNN stands for Queen News Nework as in the band. When I started this blog I was intending to cross-post some of the stories I put on that site and so a similar name seemed sensible.
Now to answer the question:
Yes, sometimes I do. The sort of writing I do has changed! I no longer want to write any sort of fanfiction and the site name links me with my past writing. Its not that I'm ashamed with what I wrote before, its just that its totally different to what I want to write now. But then I sit back and realise that I quite like the name in its own right and it describes quite well what this blog is about- and so I keep it.

"Tell us about one of your posts from this week and give us a link so we can read it (review or otherwise)!"

I was incredibly lucky to be pointed in the direction of a Christian bookshop whilst I was visiting Leamigton Spa earler in the week. There I found 2 Christian books which to buy. Click here for more about them

What are you reading now and why are you reading it?
I'm currently reading a book called 'A Great Big Read'. I picked it up off a local church's bookshop because it was free (it was published for World Book Day 2007) and Christian literature can be expensive. I started reading it now to give me a taste of a variety of Christian books that I might be interested in buying in full, since I wanted to expand my reading of Christian literature.

This week Crazy for Books wants to know:

"What book are you most looking forward to seeing published in 2011?  Why are you anticipating that book?"

The new Jasper Fforde book- One of Our Thursdays is Missing
I absolutely love Jasper Ffordes' books- they're funny and original. The Thursday Next series (of which this is the next book) are the best in my opinion.

This weeks question is 'Why Do You Read the Genre that you do? What draws you to it?'
I tend to read a wide-variety of different genres, so I guess for me the question is more 'why do I read a wide variety of genres and what draws me to a certain genre at a particular time?'
My interest in books is mainly about discovering another world and becoming a part of it. This means that I'm mostly interested in how the author writes and the enthusiam with which they express their characters and settings. I used to really love Science Fiction novels just because they took you to such different places. This interest has continued with authors such as Ursula Le Guin. It has also expanded to include comic fantasy worlds such as those created by Terry Pratchett and Jasper Fforde. Book that can make you laugh are a great joy to me, as they allow a real escape from everyday life- its stress and worries.
As well as journeying to these fantasy worlds I enjoy reading historical novels, especially those by Christian Jacq. Again, this is about experiencing another culture- this time Ancient Egypt. I love knowing that these characters are based on reality and learning about real places through them.
The last genres that I read a lot of (but not so much recently) are books about people growing up in or escaping difficult situations. These can be autobiographies, biographies, based on reality or pure fiction. I think, for me, this is partly about appreciating how good my life really is and partly about the good feelings when their situation changes. These are often hard reads, however, so I have to be in the right mood to read them. The consequence- whilst I still have a large number of these reads on my wishlist I have an equally large number on my TBR shelves.
In summary, the genres that I read are varied. I'm drawn to them by the idea of going into another world.
